New Callings
Burke and I were recently called as the new Sunbeams teachers in our ward. (For those unfamiliar with Mormon lingo, a "calling" is an assignment to serve in the congregation as a volunteer by putting in your time and talents for free. Some callings take a lot of time, such as the Bishop who is the leader of the ward and can sometimes be in his calling for up to 5 years! The Sunbeams are children ages 3-4 who are just entering Sunday School (called Primary for children under age 12). We are with them for 2 hours every Sunday, teaching them a gospel lesson for an hour and then keeping them well-behaved during music time with all the other classes.)
We are stoked! Not only is it a blast to be with the cutest and most loving little kiddos, but we also love being able to serve together. A friend reminded us that this will probably be the only time we will ever have a calling together in our entire marriage and to cherish that time together. I already am, especially as that means Daphne can be in class with us too.
Yesterday at church we taught the kids about how good music can help you feel closer to God. We made little home-made maracas, sang songs, and Burke even busted out the guitar. It was really sweet to see the kids who have clearly been taught these things at home. My favorite part of the afternoon was in singing time while Burke was holding Daphne. Two of our kids were on either side of him, and they could not get enough of Daphne. Little Ezra kept absentmindedly rubbing her head and Sage would reach over and hug her every few minutes. When they started giving kisses, Burke passed her back to me. :)
I love how a child's natural instinct is to love and be loved. We are so lucky to get to be with them!
