Blue Light Special

The day following Darcie's birth, we basically just chilled and attempted to recover at the hospital.  However, have you ever noticed that being in the hospital is the least conducive environment possible for rest and recovery?  Nurses coming in every 20 minutes to check on either me or baby, hospital reps coming to ask how you plan to pay for your baby, lactation specialists checking in to see how the nursing is coming, etc., etc.  It's exhausting just thinking about it.  After a visit from Daphne and my mom (more on that later), we tried to enjoy some time as a family and were so looking forward to going home that evening after Darcie had her 24 hour checkup.  At 7:30, we had our bags packed and were ready to go, when our nurse came back with the disappointing news that Darcie had not passed her Bilirubin test which took me a minute to realize was the same thing as saying she had jaundice.

They decided it was best to keep Darcie one more night, but to boot me to "border status" so I wouldn't be charged the $1300 dollars a night (yikes!) for being in the room and having a nurse check on me.  Burke ran to grab my meds before the pharmacies closed and then became my official nurse during the night.  I truly don't know how women do this alone - he was so so good to me and waited on us hand and foot.

This is how excited we were when we found out we needed to stay another night.  Ugh.

Despite another long night, we were so happy to hear that her levels were stabilized in the morning and by lunch time we were finally on our way!  We are grateful it was only a 2 day stay in the hospital this time rather than 5 pointless days in the NICU like Daphne had to endure.  Yet another blessing from this delivery.
