Week 9

The Good Stuff

1) Tuesday marked the beginning of a new quarter, meaning I no longer have 10 kids in my classroom for an hour before and after school since they can't make up anymore missed work.  Yes!

2) We began our new novels (Black Boy for my juniors and The Hiding Place for my seniors) and not only do I love these books, but I am already having more success in getting my students excited about them too!  There are so many thought provoking topics to delve into in both of these novels that it makes my job as a teacher really fun as I guide the discussion and try to help them recognize the life lessons we can learn from Richard Wright and Corrie Ten Boom's trials and triumphs.

3) Since my seniors are now reading the same book, I only have to prepare 2 lesson plans instead of 3!

4) My supervisor came on Thursday to observe me teach and said really nice things again.  :)

5) Burke is enjoying Kokepelli and has been getting home around 5 every day, which means I get to spend all evening with him. Hooray!

6) Burke also had an extremely positive phone interview with Campbell Scientific on Monday afternoon.  They had a huge response to the job posting and we felt so grateful he was selected for round one of interviews. He was beaming when he got off the phone and we feel like it would be such a perfect fit if everything works out.  We should hear back from them by the first week in April to see if he gets the opportunity for a face-to-face interview.  Keep those prayers coming please!

The Bad Stuff

1) I've been shocked at how little my kids know about the Holocaust, Segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.  It makes me grateful that I chose these novels to educate them on great literature as well as historical context.

2) The van.  See last post for details.  I am still driving it and it is still causing me major drama.  Enough said.

Baby Update

1) I am ravenous.  Every day after I eat, I still feel empty.  I have to carefully watch myself, because I feel like I could just eat...and eat....and eat....and eat all day long!

2) My sweet friend Bobbie dropped off this darling changing table that she made for me!  First: I really wanted a changing table, but had decided I wasn't going to buy one.  Second: I absolutely love it and feel so grateful that she would spend so much time making me such an adorable gift!  Third: Bobbie is so talented.  She took a used piece of furniture and re-covered each shelf with fabric to match my (eventual) pink and black nursery and put a nice thick pad on the top level before covering it with that beautiful chandelier fabric.  So cute!

3) Now that I have a darling piece of furniture to decorate with, my nesting instinct is in full force and I am doing everything I can to resist it.  I've told myself from the very start that I would have to ignore all impulses to do crafts, go shopping or even rearrange furniture until student teaching was over, but it is getting harder every week to resist such delightful planning in place of grading papers instead.  Not too long now...

4) My back is doing much better and I overall I feel great!  Tomorrow I will be 75 days from my due date!
