52 Dates: #35 - Comedy Night Fail & Downton Discovery

Mormons and casinos are not a good combination.  Scantily clad women, alcohol, smoking, gambling, etc.,  all under one roof is not exactly what I would call our "scene".  Although there are 3 huge casinos in Mesquite, we have managed to avoid them except for one disastrous attempt to eat at the Virgin River Buffet last fall (NEVER again!).

However, I am always on the lookout for date night ideas, especially frugal date nights, so when I saw that the Casa Blanca was putting on a free comedy night I thought it sounded like fun.  We got spruced up, hired a babysitter and headed over to the casino.  I felt uncomfortable the minute we walked in the doors.  In a tiny little town like Mesquite it was shocking to see so many people on the slot machines, zoned in like zombies on their flashing, noisy screens.  It didn't look like fun at all to me.  Instead what I saw was hundreds of people throwing away their money, oblivious to the world around them, their faces sagging and  their eyes bloodshot, blank and almost lifeless.  Frankly, it made me feel a little ill to observe and I was so grateful that's not the kind of lifestyle we pursue.

We found the theater, walked in, heard about 5 minutes worth of despicable foul jokes and walked right back out!  So much for a date night!  We hadn't been away from home for more than 15 minutes, but we felt dumb to go back so soon, so we ticked off several alternative plans.  We could go to a movie?  Nothing but rated "R"s and horror films.  We could get a redbox?  Same story.  We had already had dinner, weren't in the mood for dessert and unless we drove to St. George or Las Vegas, our options were out!

So, laughing at ourselves, we just drove home and were delighted that our little lady was still awake.  We paid the sitter, hung out as a family, put Daphne to bed and found a link to season three of Downton Abbey where we promptly watched the first two episodes.  And I loved every minute of it!  Burke and I are in love with that show and we especially can't get enough of Maggie Smith - she is incredible!  If any of you other Downton addicts want to be as cool as the British and watch the show 3 months before it comes out in the states, HERE is the link we found.  Have a date night on us. ;)

Yikes!

Dan and I went to a "family" comedy hour in Denver when we were there for New Year's six year's ago.

There were like three f-bombs, and some "awesome" ethnic jokes.

We go to Brian Regan every year, and that's about the most daring we'll ever get.

PS

I LOVE YOU FOREVER for the Downton Link.
